A tremendous, handmade monument to lives lost to AIDS, the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt demonstrated that grief and activism together could forge a powerful symbol of resilience. Winner of the Academy Award for best documentary feature, this moving film explores the human stories obscured by statistics, examining the cross section of identities affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as efforts to combat the stigma, misinformation, and political obstruction that deepened the crisis.

Before and after the screening, attendees are invited to view panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on display outside the Studio Theater of the Ferguson Center for the Performing Arts.

Following the film screening at the Torggler Fine Arts Center, a panel discussion will feature: Eric Hause is founder and publisher of Outlife757, Hampton Roads' LGBTQ Media and Events Company. Charles H. Ford, Ph.D. is professor of history at Norfolk State University and has written or co-written five books and over a dozen articles, mostly on civil rights struggles in twentieth-century Virginia and Texas. Michelle Reed has worked at LGBT Life Center for 20 years and is currently the Director of Client Engagement. Several organizations will be represented at information tables in the Atrium of the Torggler Fine Arts Center.
