Fernando Saldivia Yáñez is a portraitist. Rather than make his portraits with a static medium like painting or drawing, he uses a video camera to make moving portraits. His main subject is his hometown, Puerto Williams, Chile. A small rural community, it has the distinction of being the southernmost community in the world and a gateway to Antarctica, attracting scientists and travelers from around the world. Winter Portrait offers a slice of life in Puerto Williams and provides a quiet meditation on communication between past and present, between interior spaces and the exterior environment, between languages, and between media. The video is ultimately a consideration of relationships between people, life, and art.
