 id Gariff\, Ph.D.\, is an art historian and curator specializing in modern
  art\, the history of film\, and the art of the Italian Renaissance. Havin
 g recently retired after a long tenure as senior lecturer at the National 
 Gallery of Art\, he has taught art history at universities across the Unit
 ed States and has held fellowships in Italy at the University of Florence\
 , the University of Pisa\, and the Institute for the History of Lombard Ar
