DESCRIPTION:Once dubbed the "Lady Gaga of Vietnam\," singer-songwriter Mai
Khôi emerged from her life as a pop star to become an internationally lau
ded human rights activist. Her journey includes dialog with President Obam
a\, police detention in Hanoi\, and an invitation to the world stage in Os
lo where she received the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent. In th
is talk\, Mai Khôi provides a firsthand account of her upbringing in a co
untry devastated by war\, her rise to fame as a pop star\, and her dangero
us turn toward politics and activism. Featuring the protest songs that got
her banned from singing in Vietnam\, the talk reflects on the power and l

s pressing human rights concerns in her home country\, including censorshi
p\, police violence\, and the persecution of environmental scientists who
